Explore a Non-Surgical Option for Persistent Pain
Pain that keeps returning can make walking, exercise, work, and everyday activities more difficult. Coastal Plus Medical Center offers shockwave therapy in Jacksonville as an option to discuss when tendon or soft-tissue pain is limiting your activity.
Our team starts with an assessment of your symptoms and health history. If shockwave therapy is appropriate, we will explain the treatment, discuss realistic goals, and consider how it fits with the rest of your care.
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses a handheld applicator to deliver acoustic pulses through the skin to a targeted area. These are mechanical sound or pressure waves, rather than electrical shocks. Treatment is applied from outside the body and does not involve an incision.
The aim is to reduce pain and improve function in selected conditions. Different devices deliver the energy in different ways, and the best approach depends on the condition being treated.
Conditions to Discuss at Your Evaluation
Shockwave therapy may be considered for certain persistent tendon and soft-tissue problems, including:
- Plantar fasciitis: pain around the bottom of the heel or arch.
- Achilles tendinopathy: pain and stiffness in the tendon at the back of the ankle.
- Tennis elbow: tendon-related pain on the outside of the elbow.
- Patellar tendinopathy: pain involving the tendon just below the kneecap, sometimes called jumper’s knee.
These are examples to discuss with our team, rather than a diagnosis or a promise that every condition can be treated. Your examination and the equipment used will determine whether this treatment is suitable.
A Treatment Plan Built Around You
Shockwave therapy may be considered when symptoms continue despite other care. An exercise program, rehabilitation, changes in activity, or other treatment may still be important parts of your plan.
What to Expect During Treatment
-
Assessment and discussion
We review your symptoms, previous care, medications, and relevant health concerns. Additional evaluation or imaging may be recommended before treatment.
-
Targeted application
A clinician positions the applicator over the treatment area, usually with a contact gel. You may hear tapping and feel repeated pulses or discomfort. Tell the clinician how it feels so the settings can be adjusted when appropriate.
-
Follow-up and activity guidance
You will receive instructions about exercise, activity, and follow-up. The number and spacing of sessions depend on your condition, the device used, and your response.
Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?
Before treatment, tell our team about pregnancy, bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medicines, recent steroid injections, implanted medical devices, infection, cancer, and any previous tendon tear or surgery. These details can affect whether treatment is appropriate. Do not stop a prescribed medication on your own.
Possible side effects include temporary soreness, redness, bruising, swelling, or altered sensation. Less common complications can include tendon or soft-tissue injury. Your clinician will discuss risks relevant to your situation before you decide.
Preparing for Your Visit
Wear clothing that allows access to the affected area. Bring a medication list and any relevant imaging reports or treatment records. Think about the activities that bring on symptoms and what you would most like to get back to doing.
Ask our team about preparation, aftercare, appointment availability, and fees when you schedule.

PATIENT QUESTIONS
Shockwave Therapy FAQs
Does shockwave therapy involve electrical shocks?
No. It uses acoustic or pressure waves delivered through an applicator on the skin. It is different from electrical stimulation therapy.
Is shockwave therapy painful?
You may feel repeated tapping, pressure, or discomfort during treatment. Tell the clinician if it is difficult to tolerate. Temporary soreness can occur afterward.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions and the time between them are individualized. Our team will recommend a plan based on your condition, the device used, and your progress.
When might I notice a change?
Improvement can be gradual and varies from person to person. An early decrease in pain may be temporary. Follow-up helps the team assess whether treatment is helping and whether to adjust your plan.
Can I exercise after a treatment?
Follow the instructions provided for your condition. Normal daily activities may be possible, but strenuous or painful activities may need to be limited for a short time. Ask when to resume your usual exercise or sport.
Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?
Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary. Please call 904-642-3304 so the office can explain current fees and payment arrangements. Confirm your benefits with your insurer before starting treatment.
